Fear is our greatest enemy.

If you stop and think, almost every issue in our world has fear as a root cause.

Many of our personal struggles are rooted in fear.

Fear is not only our greatest enemy, it may very well be our oldest.

The earliest Christian communities struggled with fear. We know this because of texts like we find in 1 John, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear expects punishment. The person who is afraid has not been made perfect in love.”  I think what the writer is trying to say is that we can live in fear or we can live in love and trust, but we can’t live in both. A spirit of fear is incompatible with a spirit of love.

This Sunday we continue our sermon series Living in the Light. We have been taking a look at how we live in the light of the resurrection. In many ways, our text this week is one of those rubber meets the road texts, one that gives us a clear choice. Do we live in fear or do we live in love. Is the resurrection testimony to a God of fear or a God of love? join us this Sunday as we wrestle with this idea. My sermon is entitled “A Permanent Residence.” This promises to be an excellent Sunday to invite someone with you to church, most especially Mom, on this day in which we celebrate all forms and gifts of mothering.
