I had a recent conversation with a clergy friend about celebration. He was lamenting that in the church we don’t celebrate enough. I agree with him. As God’s people and followers of Jesus we have much to celebrate. This weekend, Sandy Springs Christian Church will celebrate our 55th Anniversary as a church. We are extremely fortunate to have Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. She will be us for both Real People, Real Faith on Friday and Saturday and will be preaching at our combined Anniversary Sunday service at 10 AM on Sunday. Make sure to stay for lunch following the service.
It may seem like 55 years is a long time, but we are just getting started. When our church was being planted in what was then rural north Atlanta, there were three main considerations of practice with which they wrestled:
Would the church accept baptism in any form or would members be required to be immerse
Would Communion be open to anyone and everyone?
Would the church support integration or would the congregation be segregated by race, color, or creed?
The answer to all three of these was yes, which was a particularly forward leaning answer in that day.
Yes, we would accept baptism in any form
Yes, Communion would be open to all
Yes, the church would support integration.
You see, God always moves us forward. We lean forward into the future, not back into the past.
God has welcomed us into the faith, into the life of this wonderful church. Our job is to be conduit through which God extends that same welcome to others.
I look forward to seeing you this weekend.
Grace and peace,
